Chugiak High’s head hockey coach will cut his 27-man roster down to 20 once the Mustangs return from their holiday break. The team has carried a heavy roster because Chugiak didn’t field a junior varsity team this year — the first time without one in school history.
Not wanting to cut anyone, Wild let the would-be JV players on varsity to develop their skills during practice. Though it’s not something he’s looking forward to, Wild said he needs to slim down his roster to gear up for the postseason.

First-year head basketball coach Fred Young has already brought some hardware back to Eagle River High. The Wolves placed second at the 32nd Annual Cougar Tip-Off Tournament at Service High on Dec. 17.
East Anchorage — where Young previously coached — took third and Chugiak won the consolation championship.
Service beat Eagle River 77-30 to claim the title in the tournament finale Saturday night. Eagle River senior Chris Parker and junior Shaquan Rhoades were both named to the all-tournament team.
BUTLERVILLE, Ind. — The economy may not show many signs of improvement, but Christmas spirit is on the rise thanks to a few soldiers who brought a little cheer to families in need. The National Guard Patriot Academy hosted its 3rd Annual Operation Christmas Blessing Monday to provide a hot meal, household goods and toys for children whose families have fallen on hard times. For them, accepting help was not easy to do.
In baking pan place your salmon fillet skin side down. Smear over the top of the salmon abut ½ cup to 2/3 cup of coconut cream. This is the asian coconut cream not the stuff used for bar drinks. Place salmon in oven and bake till salmon is flakey and done. Usually about 15-20 minutes for an 8oz fillet. At 400 degrees Use two 8 ounce portions for the soup if you want lots of salmon add another fillet. More time will be needed for larger amounts of salmon
Who is Bishop Dave Thomas? He is a first man of God. He is a husband and a father. At the tender age of 8 years old, he was baptized at Anderson Road Baptist Church. The call of God was on his life even at that age. However, Bishop Dave Thomas chose to take the long way before accepting his calling. He decided to first choose the world and all that he thought it had to offer him. He continued to attend church but he was not committed.
A trip home from a Christmas party got painful in more ways than one for a 26-year-old Eagle River resident, Anchorage police said. Shawn McKenna accidentally shot himself in the leg as he and his girlfriend drove home on the Glenn Highway in the early morning hours of Dec. 13, police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said.

At mid-day the sun hung wearily above the southern horizon, casting an orange-red glow across the frozen, snow-covered lake. The smoke from cabin chimneys around the lake’s edge rose into the sky in pencil-straight lines, then flattened out and hung like wispy clouds not far above the roof tops and spruce trees — held there by a layer of cold, dense air that was -25 degrees below zero.
Every day, Anchorage Police officers play a real-life game of cat-and-mouse with some of the most dangerous drivers in Alaska. And the baddest cat around these days is patrol officer Thomas Gaulke.
Gaulke, a 16-year veteran of the department, was recently honored by his peers with an unofficial — yet highly sought-after — award for catching more extreme speeders than any other officer on the force.
“I guess I’m in the right place at the right time,” said Gaulke, who nabbed 46 drivers caught traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour in 2011.
Recent tweaks to the municipal law that allows fireworks on New Year’s Eve require that people light ‘em off at least 200 feet from buildings around them.
The good news for Chugiak and parts of Eagle River: larger lots are more plentiful here than in Anchorage proper, so the amended ordinance probably won’t affect local residents as much as people who live in town.
