Chinooks down Miners

Chugiak-Eagle River pounded out 11 hits to earn a 6-4 Alaska Baseball League win over the Mat-Su Miners on Monday, July 2 at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer. Chugiak-Eagle River improved to 9-7 in ABL.

Steven Karkenny went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Chugiak-Eagle River, which pulled within a half game of the league-leading Anchorage Bucs (8-5). Matt Marsh gave up three runs in five innings to earn his second win of the season.

Griffin Gum went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs for the Chinooks, who also got RBIs from Kris Kwak, Chris Matthews and Austin Humes.Humes, who is hitting .345 this season, currently ranks second in the ABL in both hits and RBIs. Humes has also struck out just three times in 58 at bats.

The Chinooks are off Tuesday, July 3 before returning to action on July 4 for the first of a three-game series at the Peninsula Oilers in Kenai.
