The Chugiak boys claimed three of the top nine spots at the Bartlett 2X2X2 cross country skiing relay races Wednesday at the Bartlett High trails.

Max Beiergrohslein and Michael Earnhart claimed third place in the A boys relay, in which each member of the two-person teams skied two relay legs. Earnhart’s overall time was the day’s fourth fastest behind West’s Maxime Germaine and the service duo of Eli Hermanson and Alex Maurer, who combined to win the boys relay. Germain and teammate Everett Cason were third.

Jarett Beckett needed less than six minutes to score a natural hat trick Wednesday, leading the Chugiak Mustangs to a 3-1 Cook Inlet Conference win over Service at Ben Boeke Ice Arena.

Beckett’s goal rush started 90 seconds into the game when he scored off a Chris Kennedy assist. He racked an unassisted goal 61 seconds later, then added a power play tally with 9:32 left in the period — making it three goals in a span of 3 minutes, 58 seconds.

Tyler Huffer and Riley Lindberg added assists for Chugiak, which improved to 8-3 in the CIC.

Eagle River’s boys and girls basketball teams took a pair of Cook Inlet Conference defeats to South Wednesday at Eagle River High.

Grace Harder had a game-high 16 points in the Wolves’ 48-35 loss to the Wolverines. Eagle River (0-2 CIC) outscored South 21-16 in the second half. Abby Jensen scored six points for the Wolves, who also got five from Paige Sharpe.

In the nightcap, the Eagle River boys dropped a 71-55 decision to the Wolverines. The Wolves fell to 0-2 in the CIC.

Chugiak and Service split a pair of Cook Inlet Conference basketball doubleheader Friday night at Chugiak.

The Chugiak girls opened the evening with a 63-12 rout of the Cougars, with the Service boys returning the favor in a 50-34 runaway win over the Mustangs in the nightcap.

Eva Palmer scored a game-high 17 points for the Chugiak girls, which improved to 1-1 in the CIC. Layla Beam added 12 points and Chasity Horn had nine for the Mustangs, who led 44-2 after the first half and didn’t allow a field goal until the third quarter.

The Eagle River boys basketball team advanced to the 4th place game at the Alaska Prep Shootout Friday with a 64-56 win over Kenai Central at Dimond High.

Bryson Rollman had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wolves, who also got 11 points and eight assists from Ryan Adkins and 14 points from Jalen Jones.

Adam Trujillo scored a game-high 22 points for Kenai, which also got 12 points and eight assists from Connor Felchle.

The Wolves will play at 4 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday’s game between Grace Christian and West Valley.

Dimond scored twice in the first two minutes of the third period to earn a 3-1 comeback Cook Inlet Conference hockey win over Chugiak Thursday in a showdown of two of the conference’s top teams at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

The Mustangs led 1-0 after one period on a strike by Jarett Beckett off a Christopher Kennedy assist.

Chugiak fell to 7-3 in the CIC.

Dimond (6-3) tied the game on the first of two goals by Teague Porter early in the second period.

Local high school basketball teams had a tough opening night in the Cook Inlet Conference.

Chugiak and Eagle River were a combined 0-4 Tuesday night, with the Mustangs swept at home by West and the Wolves dropping a pair at East.

In Chugiak, the CHS boys fell 75-65 to West. Austin Harr had 19 points, Jackson Wall added 14 and Robert Sheldon had 13 in the loss. In the girls game, Chasity Horn scored a game-high 18 points and Eva Palmer added 11 but it wasn’t enough to counter a double-double by Azaria Robinson as the Eagles claimed a 55-47 win.

Alaska Nordic Racing skiers are off to a fast start at nationals.

Chugiak High sophomore Michael Earnhart advanced to the bracket portion of Friday’s classic technique junior sprint race competition by placing 59th overall in the preliminary sprint and fourth in the U18 division. Earnhart’s performance earned him a spot in the junior boys quarterfinals, where he finished fourth in his heat and failed to advance, crossing the finish line just 0.29 seconds out of a semifinal spot.

Zach Maruskie and Colin Franz won opening night races of the Chugiak Dog Mushers Association racing season on Dec. 26 at the CDMA Beach Lake Trails.

Maruskie claimed victory in the 3-dog class at the Jr./Sr. Night Race, with Franz picking up the 2-dog class win.

Maruskie covered the two-mile course in 5 minutes, 48 seconds to edge Claire Thomson and Deanna Partow, who tied for second in 6:09. Franz completed the two-mile course in 6:34 to win the 2-dog class by 34 seconds over Atticus Gorski.

Chugiak/Eagle River came up just short in its bid for a first girls hockey win of the season Friday, falling 4-3 to Dimond/West at the Dempsey-Anderson Ice Arena in Anchorage.

Briana Paxson scored twice in the first period and Erin Bernard added a second-period goal to give the team a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. But Dimond/West got third-period goals from Kaylee Larson and Hannah Gross to complete the comeback.
